Samy Rio studied cabinet-making for four years before attending the École nationale de design industriel (Ensci) in Paris, where he completed a five-year course in industrial design. This dual curriculum enabled him to combine industrial and artisanal techniques, which he considers complementary and essential to each other.

In October 2014, he graduated from Ensci-Les Ateliers with honors thanks to his research into the use of bamboo tubes and their industrial applications.

In July 2015, he won first prize for the same project at Design Parade 10, organized by Villa Noailles. Following this prize, he was invited as artist-in-residence at the Centre International de Recherche sur le Verre et les Arts Visuels (CIRVA) in Marseille and at the Cité de la Céramique in Sèvres. He also begins a collaboration with galerie kreo, following his residency at Taiwan’s National Crafts Research and Development Institute (NTCRI).

With each new residency or project, Samy Rio continues to experiment with different materials, exploring ever more closely the links between age-old crafts and modern industry, between tradition and new tools, questioning both the way we produce objects and the objects themselves.
