Autrement with Samuel Tomatis

October 2021 – January 2022

As part of the launch of its REVUE N°3, ARCHIK presents this autumn 2021 ``Autrement``, an exhibition dedicated to eco-responsible design, revealing the work of innovative and committed designers.
In Paris, Samuel Tomatis shares his ``Alga`` project.

Each year, ARCHIK shares its vision of the city, architecture, crafts and design in its Revue. This year’s edition, No. 3, is dedicated to the theme of “Paris Autrement”, a world away from the Paris of light, and aims to help you discover initiatives, places and actors who contribute to raising awareness and responding to current ecological issues.

On this occasion ARCHIK has decided to highlight the work of two committed designers who question traditional modes of consumption and manufacture through the use of discarded materials and a global eco-responsible approach.

In Paris, Samuel Tomatis presents “Alga”, the fruit of his research into the use of invasive algae in the creation of new alternative materials to leather, brick, plastic or fabric. In an immaculate setting, he stages his projects in the form of accumulations and presents the entire process: raw algae serving as raw material, samples of new materials created through experimentation, prototypes of concrete objects.

Samuel Tomatis

Graduated from the Institut Supérieur des Arts Appliqués and then from ENSCI-Les Ateliers with honours in 2016, Samuel is an ambassador for a work on algae in the world of contemporary design. In 2017, he was a finalist for the Audi Talents and winner of the Agora grant for design, chaired by Erwan Bouroullec. In 2019, he will be in permanent residence at Les Ateliers de Paris. At the same time, his work will be exhibited at La Fabrique du Vivant at the Centre Pompidou and some of his pieces will enter the museum’s collection. Finalist of the 14th edition of the Design Parade, he exhibited his Alga project at the Villa Noailles. In 2019, he also won the Déclic Jeune grant from the Fondation de France. In 2021, the Alga exhibition will present all of his research at the Pavillon de l’Arsenal. Finally, he won the Grand Prix de la Création de la Ville de Paris.

In a radical ecological approach, the challenge of the Alga project is to raise the invasive algae from the rank of local waste to the rank of positive production with multiple applications.
