SUSPENSION ONDE(S)

Conceived as a research laboratory, the Parisian design studio Studiofoam offers a unique interpretation of materials, at the crossroads of art, craft and design.

Founder Caroline Venet is a graduate of ESAA Duperré and the Design research department of ENS Paris-Saclay. Through her design studio, Caroline questions manufacturing techniques and processes, while developing a multi-faceted approach ranging from experimentation to installation, material and surface design, product design, set design, scenography and art direction.

ONDE(S) suspension questions the potential of leather. The material is suspended simply, without any additions, so the object makes the most of leather’s potential as a formal structurer and flexible visual filter. Moulding stiffens the leather to form the luminaire’s shell, while perforation lightens the second skin, which is already naturally supple. The result is a functional optical vibration. These perforations play with our perception of the material: from a distance, we might see thin sheet metal or perforated metal; up close, the sensuality of the leather appears, then vibrates with the pattern, the optical weave”, explains Caroline.
